Monday Harvest 10/5/09

I missed posting last week, though there wasn't much to mention beyond some swiss chard and some kale. We also used a good amount of our basil to make a batch of fresh pesto. We'd uprooted it and had it in a vase inside after the frost warnings. I didn't weigh it because my husband was making dinner. This week it was more kale, twice in fact.

We harvested 4 oz of winterbor kale and 1 oz of chicory/italian dandelion (from the cold frame) to mix in with mashed potatoes.
Later in the week I picked 5 oz of lacinato kale for mixing in a mexican vegetable soup. (no photo). Yesterday I picked one of the white vienna kohlrabi because it had two holes bored into it. Don't let the picture deceive you. It was only 4 oz and a bit smaller than a tennis ball. We've yet to slice into it.
You can see other gardeners' harvests at Daphne's Dandelions.

I keep thinking I ought to try kohlrabi. My mother grew it occasionally and I have absolutely no memories of it except it was a weird looking vegetable. So at least I know I don't hate it, or that would be all I remembered. Mexican vegetable soup sounds good.

You been harvesting some really nice kale. Not sure how mine will do this fall, I think I should have started the kale sooner. I wasn't sure what to think of my kohlrabi, it was good cut thin in salads but I grated some for coleslaw and in went all mushy. I never tried cutting it into match sticks for slaw though, that might have made the texture better.

I am definitely adding kohlrabi to the list next year. I've heard so much about it. I like a good raw veggie. It's apparently good in salads, as Dan pointed out, but also plain or with a little side dip.
I think it's real pretty too !

We sliced the kohlrabi thin and added it to the steamer with broccoli tonight. It was good. This bulb was small and didn't have the bite I remember from the last time I tried it.

I've never had kohlrabi. I'd have to try it before planting it, I think.

Your kale looks really good!

We had our first snow here in northern Wyoming. Will be cold all week... even down to 0 at night... burrr...

Beautiful kale! It's amazing how it takes off while everything else slows down or dies. Good thing we love it so much! We roasted some in the pizza oven this week, and it was incredible. Enjoy yours! The Mexican soup sounds awesome.

I've never had kohlrabi before but I'm growing the white and purple varieties this fall. They're still little seedlings right now but I'm excited to try them! The dandelion also looks really pretty with the red stems.

Is that a red stemmed chicory? Very pretty! Yum, kale and potatoes is one of my favorite combos.

Michelle,
Yes, it is red-stemmed chicory called Italiko Rosso. However one of my 3 plants has white stems. I haven't gotten much from it but I hope I'll be able to continue to harvest because of the cold frame's protection.
