Harvest Monday 1/10/11

For the first harvest in the New Year there is some good, and not so good. At first glance, these two pound of brussels sprouts looked great.
However, when I went to cut them for cooking, many had spoiled inside from the cold.
So we only ended up with 9 oz to go in the oven.
I debated picking more of brussels sprouts last month, but I left some in the garden to see how long they would last. I guess I got my answer. Next year we'll pick them before the snow and extreme cold set in.

I picked 6 oz of kale yesterday. Some of it was a little damaged by the cold too, but it went fine into soup.

And for fresh tasting greens, I enjoyed these sprouts on my tacos. They were very good.
As far as using up the preserved harvest, we used frozen swiss chard, potatoes from the celler, and leeks I pulled last month in a pureed soup. I cooked some of my dried beans to make bean tacos and the also went into next soup. We also made a tortilla soup with tomato sauce base, our own onions, our dried beans, the kale above, frozen oven dried tomatoes, and corn I froze from down the road. We need to get to work on all the frozen fruit. I think some desserts are in order.

Total week: ~1 pound
Total this year: ~ 1 pound

It is definitely soup weather.

Too bad about the Brussels sprouts. At least some of the survived. I'm slowly figuring out what will and will not survive the really cold weather, but I think it will take year before I'm done experimenting.

That's a bummer about your brussels sprouts. I am growing them for the first time and am not having good results. But, maybe eventually I will get to harvest a few.

I agree....it's definitely soup weather! I made leek & potato soup and a nice chili con carne this week from our veggies and dried beans.

Homegrown Brussel sprouts this time of year is definitely an accomplishment...even if the results were mixed.

Your Lacinato kale has fared much better than mine. I have a feeling that the wide temperature fluctuations in the hoop house has something to do with it.

I'd love to be able to grow Brussels sprouts, but that is the one crop in my garden that gets attacked by aphids, so it's inedible.

I am growing Brussels sprouts this year for the first time. For now there is only foliage, but I think that in early spring it could continue the growth. Maybe I even get to harvest it.

We are using a lot of frozen fruit. Usually in pies!

Even though you had to trim it aggressively - the brussel sprouts look delicious! One of my favorite late fall crops. I did not grow any in 2010 and missed them. Having trouble finding a spot for them in the 2011 garden as well which is a problem.

Your kale looks yum too. I was thinking it is time for some soup for dinner this week too.

What a shame about your brussels sprouts, they certainly did look great on the outside. Better luck with next year's crop. I've not yet been able to grow a decent stalk of them but fortunately there are really good locally grown sprouts available.
