Harvest Monday 6/28/10

This week was a week of firsts harvests.

The first two broccoli (9.5 oz),
The first (and only) cherries (4 oz),
The first kale (1lb 2oz),
The first shelling peas (2.5 oz) and the first broccoli rabe (6.24 oz).The broccoli rabe is the back of the colander. Standard broccoli is in the front.
And then there was still more lettuce. We were traveling to visit my mom in Maryland. Her lettuce has gone bitter so she requested I bring some. I brought her over 12 oz of thinnings. Earlier in the week I harvested lettuce too so that brings the lettuce for the week to 1 lb.

Total this week: 3.5 pounds
Total this year: 9.4 pounds

You can see other gardeners' harvests at Daphne's Dandelions.

What will it take for my broccoli to produce ? It's just not forming heads. Yours is perfect ! So is your kale. With space at a premium, I'm saving mine for Fall.

Great harvest !

Oooooh cherries! I love cherries. I'm going to have to find some that do well down here in the south. Wonderful harvest!

Your head of broccoli is fantastic! Mine never did get large heads this year, but what I got have been tasty.

Your kale is beautiful. It's way too hot here for greens like that. Even our lettuce is wilting! It's nice you were able to share yours.

What kind of cherries are those? They have a lovely speckly colour. Nice head of broccoli!!

Thanks for all the kind comments.

@ottawa gardener- I have no idea what type of cherries they are. They are from a old tree at the front of our house. We thought it was ornamental. I picked them as they were starting to ripen because the birds were starting to get to them and there were only a few I could reach. They ripened a bit darker off the tree and were yummy.

I was going to ask you about the cherries, too, but Ottawa Gardener beat me to it. Your harvest looks so delicious!

That's a nice head of broccoli and lovely greens, they look so yummy. It's getting hot in our neck of the woods, no lettuce for me this summer, have to start some seeds for fall harvest soon.

Do you do anything special to your broccoli raab? I got some for the first time this year, and wasn't quite sure what to do with it. Stir fried, and that was pretty good, but I was at a loss as to what else. Nice harvest!

Pretty broccoli. Some year I swear I'll get a good broccoli harvest in the spring. I've not succeeded yet.

Your broccoli looks perfect! Too bad the cherry harvest was so small, they look so good. The rest of the harvest looks great too, it's such a joy to see beautiful veggies fresh from the garden.
